My journey as a Mama Coach
” I believe that all moms need to empower each other so that we can feel like the fantastic moms I know we are.”
My name is Jodi and I am a mom of three beautiful daughters, a wife, an RN, lactation counsellor, and sleep consultant. I’ve been nursing families for the past 6 years, and love working with children on the Pediatric ward for the past 4 years. I am ecstatic about being part of The Mama Coach family as I am passionate about working with families and making motherhood easier. I can’t wait to meet you and your little ones.
My journey to becoming a Registered Nurse was a long and not so straight forward journey, as I did not have a clear path after high school. I started as an Exercise Therapist working with prenatal clients and those with chronic disease. Through this experience I learned that I love working with people and wanted to do more to help others, so I went back to school. Through life experience and going back to school I realized that I wanted to work with children because there are many opportunities to learn and grow everyday, as every patient and family is different. I love that every case is a different puzzle, each one having its own set of unique puzzle pieces, and as a nurse I put the pieces together based on knowledge, science, and experience. I received my nursing degree in 2012 and work in the areas of pediatrics and adult medicine.
My journey to motherhood was long and difficult which inspired me to want to help other families in their journeys. My pregnancies were hard both physically and emotionally. My first daughter was born in 2013 after a long, difficult, and emotional journey of infertility. During this pregnancy I struggled with instability in my SI joint, pain, and the inability to leave my home alone as a result. She finally made her appearance via emergency section 2 weeks after her due date. Then in 2016 our family grew to 5 with the birth of our twin daughters. In addition to the problems I had the first time around I also had “all day sickness” throughout my entire pregnancy. Despite wanting a vaginal birth, these beautiful babies arrived at 35 weeks 3 days via planned c-section due to medical reasons.
My journey to becoming a Mama Coach came after realizing I survived my first year with the twins. I was looking for a way to give back to other mothers by offering support as the first years for all my children were very difficult for me. Breastfeeding with my first started off rocky. She had poor weight gain in the beginning, it was painful leading to cracked and bleeding nipples, frustrating in many ways, and exhausting. Despite being told by all health care providers that we were doing great with feeding, I knew something wasn’t right because she never acted satisfied after a feed. At three months we had a breakthrough in learning she had a lip tie that was promptly cut. Feeding improved but not without consequences and I struggled with milk supply for the rest of our breastfeeding journey. With the twins came a whole new set of problems and a new learning curve. For the first three months they fed every hour or two which led to severe sleep deprivation. In addition I had a lazy feeder, a lip tie, and a dairy sensitivity. But through the help of many resources and my village of moms we made it through. Both my breastfeeding journeys involved a combination of feeding at the breast, bottles with expressed breast milk, pumping, and formula.
My goal for being a Mama Coach is to help other moms not feel alone and isolated as I did in the early days. Between these feelings, also struggles with some mental health issues. I want to use my skill and knowledge that I have acquired through being a mom and a Registered Nurse to help make motherhood easier for other woman in a non judgmental environment. I believe that all moms need to empower each other so that we can feel like the fantastic moms I know we are.
