Lisa Hicks, NP
Tell us about yourself and why you decided to become a Nurse practitioner.
Nursing has always held a special place in my heart. I grew up surrounded by children and knew working with children was my future. I began my career as a Registered Nurse in a pediatric hospital and never left, this was my dream job. I love working with children and their families, helping them reach optimal health while making their experience as positive as possible. As my career continued, I wanted to learn more about these amazing little humans which directed me to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. With my additional education, knowledge and experience, I am able to provide children and families with evidenced based exceptional care.
What is a nurse practitioner? How can you care for families?
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) with additional education and experience. NPs are required to meet specific exam requirements set by their governing body. NPs are able to assess, diagnose and provide treatment and care to individuals within their scope of practice.
As a NP, I care for families using a holistic family centred care approach to ensure your family receives the best care possible.
If you had one bit of advice to give to a new parent, what would it be?
Advocate for your child/children and follow your instincts. No question is a silly question.
Self-care is a big challenge for parents. How do you maintain your own energy and outlook?
Self care is so important but can be easily forgotten as we get wrapped up in our daily routines. Self care to me can be something as simple as listening to music in a quiet place or going for a nice swim at the cottage. I make an effort to set aside time to myself a couple times a month to do different activities as I enjoy trying new things.
