Tell us about your own journey and how your experiences have changed the way you look at motherhood and parenting.
My husband and I each grew up with one sibling, whom we are close with. We had always talked about having two kids of our own someday, and now here we are- right in the thick of it. We are now the proud parents to a beautiful little girl and handsome baby boy. Since becoming parents, the admiration we have for our own parents, has gone to a whole new level. Parenting is not easy!! Motherhood is not easy either!! It is so many things... beautiful, messy, frustrating, amazing, exhausting... and yet I wouldn't trade it for the world. Anyone could tell me what motherhood was going to be like, but until I became a Mom, I didn't fully understand it. It truly is the hardest job I've done, but also the most fulfilling. We definitely feel like we have our hands full most days, but on the bright side, our hearts are exploding with love for these two!
Tell us a little about your nursing career.
When I was in high school I realized I wanted to become a nurse. I was drawn to nursing because it has so many different avenues and it is a career that involves always learning something new. I've been nursing now for ten years. I've gained invaluable experience on a combined surgical and obstetrical ward, as well as a combined ward that included ante-partum, gynecology, and gyne-oncology patients, and in an operating room at a women's hospital. Since becoming a nurse, I have learned that it is just as much an honour to be with someone as they leave this world, as when they enter it. It is a very fulfilling career that has given me the privilege to be with people at some of their worst times in life, but also their best. It truly is a career like no other.
Ashley's willingness to go above and beyond for her clients is extremely apparent. She is incredibly knowledgeable and very thoughtful of her client's needs. I am beyond pleased with her attentiveness to my child's unique needs. She is very easy to talk to and makes you feel at ease. Furthermore, I have asked her for many advice type questions and she has always promptly responded to me, even when it is off business hours. I would absolutely recommend Ashley and all the services she offers.
What are the two most important lessons you've learned working with moms, babies, and families?
Two most important lessons I've learned:
- there is more than one right way to do things (there are many parenting styles out there and each mom/parent will do things differently... this is just fine!!)
- each baby is different (they come with their own likes & dislikes and this too is o.k.)
If you had one bit of advice to give to a new parent, what would it be?
One bit of advice for a new parent would be... try not to get caught up in everyday life so you can enjoy all the special moments with your kids. They are only little once and time really does go by fast.
Self-care is a big challenge for parents. How do you maintain your own energy and outlook?
Self-care can be really tough! I try my best to remember that the smallest things can leave me feeling recharged. This can be an extra long shower or renting a movie when our kids are asleep or enjoying some quiet time reading a new book. Self-care to me, is doing anything that makes me happy. As a family, we love being outdoors, so fresh air is a big part of my self-care. Self-care doesn't have to mean getting away or costing a lot. It's just good to keep in mind that these small things we can do to feel good, make a huge difference on our well-being and outlook on life.
Is there anything we've missed that you'd like to share with Mama Coach clients?
Since becoming a nurse, I have found my passion to be in women's health. When I first heard about The Mama Coach, I was intrigued! To be able to help make motherhood easier on Moms, sounded amazing! I am always looking forward to meeting a new Mom and helping her any way I can!
