My journey as a Mama Coach
” Being a mom can be hard. The transition is an immense adjustment and I think it’s a difficult one for most. I can’t wait to help you find your way!”
Hey Ottawa! My name is Antea (An-tay-a) and I’m a Perinatal Registered Nurse, Lactation Counselor, and Infant Sleep Coach. I’m extremely excited to bring The Mama Coach to the nation’s capital! I’ve always known that I wanted to help people in some shape or form, and I always loved my science classes, especially biology. Nursing seemed like the perfect fit for me with various outlets to grow and learn with the ultimate goal of giving the best care to the people in my community. After graduating from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2009, I immediately started my adventure in labour and delivery and completely fell in love. Supporting and advocating for mothers and families is my calling. There’s definitely something special about bringing new life into the world! I adore the bonds that I’ve created with women and families.
Hospital stays are getting shorter, and women are not receiving the appropriate support that they truly need. I thrive on knowing that parents feel comfortable and confident with their new additions after their hospital stay. Through my experience, it has become evident that women crave and need more one-on-one time with a knowledgeable professional, which is why my transition into the Mama Coach was a no-brainer!
In 2014 I had to have surgery to remove a massive fibroid attached to my uterus. It was the size of a 5 month pregnancy! It was a grueling time not knowing how successful it would be and the fear set in that I could potentially lose my fertility completely. Thankfully, with the right professionals and support, everything was successful and my husband and I were able to start a family!
We welcomed our first beautiful baby boy in 2016 and it was a whirlwind of emotions. I found it overwhelmingly difficult. As much as I loved this little bundle of joy, I couldn’t help but feel extremely isolated. Breastfeeding helped me strengthen the bond with my baby but I started to feel anxious every day not knowing what the night would bring and how much he would need to feed. The breastfeeding got excruciating, to the point where I would be sweating and crying before he would even latch on, and it was discovered that he had thrush. It was another battle that we stuck through together, and after it was treated things got easier. So we pulled through it, but it felt like a lonely journey. My husband was incredibly supportive but I would still feel so alone at times. Fast forward 18 months and we welcomed another little boy to our lives. A very different experience than the first. So much to do! So much to juggle! How can we do this?! A lot of the same emotions from my first returned with a vengeance, and I FINALLY reached out for help. There is so much to learn and so much to adjust, and we are tackling it day by day.
Everyone has a story. Everyone has a unique set of wishes, priorities, and needs. Just like babies! Each one is different from the next. I want to support you through your journey without judgement, supporting those wishes and needs for your family unit. I hope we can start to ask women: “How are YOU?” more often. I believe mothers are the cornerstones of the family unit and a healthy mama is a healthy family. Not one person knows everything from the get-go, and I want to be that person that you can turn to for the right advice for you and your family at the right time. I never want anyone to feel alone or isolated, which is why I am so passionate about being a Mama Coach.
I believe my experience as a Registered Nurse in labour and delivery has equipped me with a ton of knowledge that will be beneficial to women everywhere. Being a mama gives me a deeper understanding of what you are going through. From prenatal and breastfeeding support to allergies and sleep, I’ve got you covered.
We can figure this out together! You are not alone. You don’t need to feel ashamed for reaching out for help; I’m here for you and I just can’t wait to meet you and get started!
