My journey as a Mama Coach

My name is Amanda and I am so excited to bring the Mama Coach to Vancouver. I am a mom to one beautiful little girl, a Perinatal Registered Nurse, a lactation counsellor and an infant sleep coach. I can’t wait to help you reach your goals as a family.
Ever since I can remember, the only thing I have ever wanted to be when I grew up was a mom. When I realized that being a mom doesn’t pay very much (in the monetary sense) I figured I should decide on a career path. I enrolled in to nursing school at BCIT and after experiencing birth and postpartum care I knew exactly where my heart needed to be. Soon after I graduated I started working as a registered nurse on a postpartum unit here in Vancouver. Later that year I completed my Perinatal Specialty Certificate and started working in labour and delivery. I absolutely love being a nurse and helping women and their families in such an important time in their lives, but I also started to feel constrained by time limits and that I couldn’t always give every family the time and support they needed during their brief hospital stays. I felt my time was being spread too thin in the hospital setting and I knew in my heart I could be giving more.
Around this same time I started my own journey in to motherhood, which wasn’t easy, as we had multiple miscarriages before becoming pregnant with our little girl in the spring of 2016. When she finally arrived and I held her in my arms I was SO in love and SO overwhelmed. Here I was with this amazing little human I created and I had no idea what to do. Even though I was a perinatal nurse I was just like every other new mom out there; lost, scared, excited, full of love…. and hormones. I have a type-A personality and I was so used to being prepared and organized but when she was born I felt totally lost.
The visions I had of motherhood were not coming to fruition. I had this passionate, smart and alert little girl who hated sleep, loved her soother and only liked me holding her. I was beyond exhausted, she was waking up 8-12 times a night, I was getting no sleep and I was starting to feel anxious all the time. By the time she was 4 months old I had reached the end of my rope, I just knew there had to be a better way, a better way to help her sleep and a better way for me to achieve my goals as a mom.
I decided I needed to do some research so I read every book I could find on sleep and infant development and I searched the internet for endless hours (of the night) trying to find a solution. Even with this new found knowledge I knew that I had to really think about my unique baby. After spending time talking with my mom community, including The Mama Coach, and truly thinking about what would work best for my little girl I decided to implement our sleep training plan. It wasn’t easy to make this change but it was so worth the outcome. Helping my baby learn to sleep was one of the best gifts we have given our family. She is a rested and happy baby, a majority of the time, and I am enjoying more of the moments we spend together. We are still a work in progress as she finds a new way to test me every week but we are all better rested and ready to take on the next challenge.
I am so excited to be a Mama Coach and spend time with you and your family as you take on this new and exciting journey. I will help you prepare prenatally, support you with how you choose to feed your baby, and help you ALL get some sleep so you can truly enjoy all the special moments in the first year and beyond.
